Day 4: monument and back home

I had a good night. I had plans for day 4, so I had to eat and check out. First stop: on the top of the hill. After 2 km and some steap roads I was there, first a beautiful ruine and then the kyffhäuser monument, a gorgeous building with an amazing panoramic view on the top! I had not much time, but the for me €4.5 was well-spend!

At 10u45 I had to leave and go down the mountain to the highway. Going down the mountain was an experiance. It was steap but save enough to go fast, and it was off-road.

9 km later I was at the highway where my father was with the car to pick me up. And we could go home!

I learned much in this 3 days. I learned that 100mm cranks are to short If you are not in Belgium or the Netherlands. I learned that 60-80km in one day a save and reachable dictance is. I leared you can meet interesting people in youth hostels. And much more!

In total I dit around 300 km. The first day well over 140km, the second day about 90km, the thirt day 66 km and the fourth day 11 km. I started 12/07/2019.

More beautiful and special pictures will come the next days on my Facebookpage and Instagram!

Day 3: follow the river

I was in Erfurt. So I had to find an other youth hostel in the direction of the highway, where my father would pick me up. I found a beautiful youth hostel, but they didn’t had a place for me. But first I went to the breakfast, together with the bus Hungarians and a Canadian couple. They were making a tour through Europe and planned to do arount 2000km (with the bike). It was fun to talk with them. But we bouth needed to plan our days so the conversation was short.

I called a youth hostel 66km from Erfurt, so my day wasn’t in a ruch. After going straight through the center of erfurt I saw a raincloud right in front of me… but it wasn’t raining yet. The sky was beautifull! On a flat and straight road I had a beatiful panoramic view. And the best of all was that I had no rain from that cloud!

The roads were flat, that was becaus of a river I was following. A good straight biking path, sometimes a little swing to keep it fun and a beautiful view… relaxing!

I had time, and when I saw a beautiful ruine with an overview over the area, I wanted to reach it. So I parked my unicycle and started walking up the hill. And it was beautiful (see pictures below).

At 8 km from the youth hostel I saw the monument (kyffhäuser) that was located on on top of the same hill as the youth hostel. But to get there I had to off-road on sometimes un-unicycleble roads. I had to go through a the fields where I couldn’t find the road I was supposed to follow, but I always got to the correct road. It was fun, a little bit of adverture. And I got there! And when some children came back from running up the hill and started complaining over how streap it was, the parents pointed at my unicycle and asked me to tell them what I had been doing for 3 days.

The whole evening, I sat and talked with a family of Belgium.

To know what the +1 means, so what I dit in day 4, wait for my blog of tomorrow.

The date I rode day 3 was the 14th of july.

Day 2: straight on!

This was day 2 of my 3(+1) day ride.

The previous day was tough at the end. And I had to do 123 km. But I decided to keep going. The breakfast started at 9am so I couldn’t start urly. But after I made a paper with all the places I would go through as a back-up, I started in a great mood. On a long downhill I had a beautifull view over a lake. But after giong down, you have to go up again. Up a 2 km long 12% road (on 100mm cranks). I dit 700m with the unicycle, but walking went faster.

After that, there were variable roads and views. 30 km done, I was going in a straight line constantly a bit up or downhill. That’s fun and relaxing you would think… It can be, but if the wind decides do follow the same road, but in the other direction, it isn’t relaxing anymore…

When I was 62 km far, I was in the middle of the tour, but when I calculated the ours I had left, I would be at the youth hostel at 8h30pm. But that was when I counted the first half would go at the same speed as the first half…

I decided I would go to the youth hostel in Erfurt, 20km away. There was a place and dinner for me! So I dit that 20 km half happy because I didn’t had to do that much km, but also a bit frustrated becaus I wouldn’t reach my ‘goal’ “4 days 400km”.

I reached the youth hotel and had dinner with a bus of Hungarian people. In my room I started planning the next day.

Tomorrow you can find out where day 3 brought me!

Day 1: storm and horse meadow

I am back form 300 km unicycling in 3 days. In my previous blog I sead I was gonna do 400 km in 4 days, but plans changed because of different reasons.

Day 1: Storm and horse meadow

Let’s start with the first day. I started at 8 in the morning with my backpack, unicycle, 100mm cranks and 2 fully charged phones. I would do 134km.

It went well, I had some offroad and hills to do, but I dit them. After 51km, I left the Czech Republic and I went further in Germany. When I had to do 35 km, I had to do a long uphill and that was a little bit to much. But I got over it and the next uphill was easyer.

At around 4pm my first phone had 5% and I swiched to the phone without sim. I had to do less then 15 km. After a steap down hill (10km to do) it began to storm… It was raining verry hard and super windy. So I went in an open garage of an abandoned hotel. But afer 10 minutes it looked like it wouldn’t get better soon, so I went on.

Or not… Google maps was sending me next via a closed off horse meadow. Ok, there were no horses, so I went through expecting to find a path or something. But it went into buches… The map on my phone wasn’t loading for this area, so I couldn’t look for an other route.

On the other site of the river (Saale) was a bikepath, it was the only road in the correct direction, so I took it. It was flat, so it went fast. Untill there was a road block: half a tree was laying in front of me. It was still storing and it just happend… That’s scary!

I went past it and asked some fire-fighters for the route, but they didn’t know… But I was in a small town and thought that I would first eat there something and charge my phone with internet. But the only restaurant there was, was full of water… (that was one of the reasons there were fire-fighters)

Someone at a hotel told me the route, so I started climbing, and climbing… And than I was… in a place that he didn’t say I would go through… At this moment I thought that my phone with internet wasn’t fully out of battery. So I started It back up and searched my route… 14 km. I gave my other phone wifi and searched the route… 8km?? And then my phone (with 4g) was out of battery. I had the route! (and I didn’t thought about the 6km in difference)

8km later, I was there!! Only the youth hostel wasn’t… A man saw me searching and asked me what I was searching. He knew what I was searching, and wanted to bring me with the car. The only problem was that he had drunk alcohol already that night… he took me to the cafe and asked the boss if he could help. Solution: a worker could leave earlier and would take me to the youth hostel.

I was there! 9pm… the front door of the youth hostel was closed, but there was a bell. First time ringing… nothing. Second time: nothing. third time…… yes!

Tomorrow I will write about the second day!

4 days, 400 km

I am now on holydays in Czech Republic. And as a unicyclist on vacation, I want to make a longer ride. So I leave tomorrow (friday) and the first day I ride 134 km to a youth hostel in Germany. The second day will be 117 km to Lauterbach (Germany). The third day is 120 km to a really beautifull located youth hostel. And, because I don’t have more time (and maybe also because it’s my first time doing such a long distance) I’ll only ride 51 km the 4th day where my father picks me up on his ride home.

I am doing this with my 36 inch wheel and 100mm cranks… why 100mm? Because I live in Belgium and I forgot longer cranks ;-b

I wanted to check out the beginning yesterday, so I rode for 30 minutes, and it was 7 km climbing… but it went well.400km 4 days
